Perseverance is a constant motif throughoutthe novel. The theme is primarily embodied in Jessica, a young woman who survives a traumatic accident but at the significant cost of her leg and her sense of self. Despite the obstacles facing her, she finds the strength within herself to overcome her trials and learns more about who she truly is and what impact she can have on the world around her.
Growth and maturity are key components at work in this story. Initially, and understandably, Jessica reacts poorly and selfishly to her changed circumstances. But through her journey, she matures and begins to see the world beyond her tragedy, becoming a young woman capable of empathy and compassion for others.
Self-confidence and self-esteem are themes dealt with realistically in the novel. Both elements are lost to Jessica after she loses her leg and feels that everything that makes her who she is has disappeared. She worries about what other people think of her, of what she looks like, of being known only by her disability. These qualities grow stronger in Jessica as she completes her quest, but she honestly acknowledges the constant struggle she will have to keep personal negativity at bay in her life.
Jessica’s personal identity is defined by her love of and her skill at running. When her ability to run is taken away, she struggles to redefine herself outside of running. Ultimately, Jessica learns that she is more than just a runner, that she is a whole person who is talented in multiple ways and who is loved and respected by those around her.
The themes of compassion and empathy are found in Jessica’s relationship with Rosa. It is through her friendship with Rosa that Jessica is able to see beyond her personal disability and gain a better understanding and sympathy for how someone like Rosa has lived her whole life. The development of these themes spurs Jessica to decide to run with Rosa in the River Run race.
Jessica’s track team embodies the theme of teamwork in the novel. The members of both the boys’ and girls’ teams work together to fundraise through car washes and bake sales, in orderto raise enough money for Jessica’s running prosthetic. They are also instrumental in offering her support as she trains and runs the River race.
Jessica experiences two forms of friendship in the book: first with her long-time friend, Fiona, and then with her newfound friend, Rosa. Both Fiona and Rosa value Jessica and are there to support her throughout her struggles. Fiona accepts Jessica immediately after the accident without question, and Rosa inspires Jessica with her notes of kindness and as a role model for living with a disability. These friendships form the foundation of Jessica’s efforts to find a new way to live her life.
